Whenever there’s a bad manager in charge, everyone suffers. The employee morale goes down and their productivity goes along with it. Employees start being absent. The corporate officers that are above the bad manager also feel the negativity. They have to actually put aside some time to solve problems that emerge in the office. They also have to assume the roles of underperforming managers. Thankfully, there are ways through which you can identify a bad boss or a negative working environment before you go there to work.

1. Be a proactive detective

Go online and perform some research about the company. Go beyond their Facebook page and official website. Navigate to feedback websites such as Glassdoor. Here, you can find out what current and previous employees have to say about the company and those who work in it. The comments which are posted here can tell you what the employees feel about those who work in the firm you intend to join. You can also find out elements such as the management hierarchy and if there are any opportunities to advance your career. You can even use networks such as LinkedIn to make keyword and connection searches. Also, interact with current and former employees. While doing so, ask if they are happy and enquire why they left their jobs.

2. Think about your future

While undergoing the interview, have your future potential in mind. Focus on how the company will contribute to your growth as a professional. Enquire about how your professional development can be utilized. Ask questions about how the company at hand will make a contribution to your professional growth. Ask about what you can learn from the firm in terms of travel opportunities, continuing education and personal growth. Essentially, if you are going to devote your passion and much of your life to a firm, it is important to consider what you’ll get in return.

3. Assess and interact with your potential colleagues

As you scope out a place before you get employed there, your power of observation is very critical. Arrive at the interview spot earlier than everyone else. After that, sit and observe. Observe how the employees interact with each other in a non-professional method. Observe the tone of their voices, body language, movement patterns, and general behavior. Anything negative should be flagged and noted. If it is possible, go to lunch or coffee with your interviewers. After that, observe how they interact with the waiter. This shows you how these people in power treat their juniors.

4. Consider an At-Will employment contract

This is where the employee can decide to leave without even having to give two weeks’ notice. The employer also has the ability to hire and fire at will. Thus, if you value your professional freedom, check if this type of employment is available. This gives you a chance to leave if you feel that the working environment is not healthy for you.
