The Amazon boss Jeff Bezos and his wife MacKenzie have announced that they are getting divorced. After 25 years of being married, they are calling it quits. The couple took to Twitter to announce this decision. The tweet said that after exploring life lovingly together and also going through a separation, they have decided to divorce and continue their lives purely as friends.
Jeff and MacKenzie met in 1992 at a job interview. After 3 months, they were married. They moved to Seattle in 1994. Here, Jeff founded the mega-store known as Amazon. Today, he is the richest man on the planet. Here is his net worth and how his money will get divided after the divorce.
Filthy rich with $137 billion
The first time that Jeff Bezos became a millionaire was in 1997. This was when he raised $4 million in Amazon’s first Initial Public Offering (IPO). From there, the company grew in leaps and bounds. Today, he is the richest man in the world with a net worth of $137 million.
He has invested his money in very smart ways. He has real estate ventures worth millions of dollars and has launched his own space company known as Blue Origin.
In 2018, he and MacKenzie started a charity fund known as the Day One Fund. It helps homeless families and constructs pre-schools in communities that have low-income earners. In the same year, they pledged a total of $2 billion to provide non-profits with funds directed towards these same objectives.
So far, it seems like Bezos and his wife will have an amicable divorce. This is especially so for the sake of the children. The couple has 4 children. They are 3 sons and a daughter that they adopted from China.
Through their tweet, the couple said that they were lucky to have found each other and got married. They are grateful to each other and have had a great life together. If they knew that their marriage would end in divorce, they’d still do it all again. While the labels will change, they will still always be a family and most importantly, best friends.
What will MacKenzie get?
Jeff Bezos got married to MacKenzie after he had already started up Amazon. Therefore, she is entitled to half of his huge fortune. That is $68.5 billion. While she may not walk out of the marriage with this amount in full, she is definitely guaranteed to leave with at least a billion dollars. MacKenzie is known for penning the bestseller, The Testing of Luther Albright. Interestingly, her total divorce money may never be revealed to the public!
